Letter to the Editor: 2 Chainz not same issue as Circus Spectacular

By Otis Buckley

When was the last time you saw PETA protest a rapper?

One has nothing to do with the other. I think it was highly irresponsible and unethical for a journalist to write from such a one-sided perspective.

Jeremiah Caterina never reached out to any of the organizations, officers or individuals that signed the petition [to cancel Circus Spectacular] to ask how we feel about 2 Chainz coming to NIU.

Accusing us of living a double standard and alluding that we “glorify the so-called ‘thug life’” was unjust, amoral and inaccurate.

To write such a negative column and mention the officers that signed the letter to the president but not reach out to us was immoral.

The officers that signed the letter did the right thing, the 2,700 individuals that signed the petition did the right thing and Dr. Mitchell Irwin did the right thing by starting the petition. The campus needs to know this and not be afraid to stand up for what is right.

If Jeremiah Caterina believes a person or organization should not come to NIU then I encourage him to start a petition, do the legwork and try to bring about positive change.

I sincerely thank everyone that signed the petition, all of the officers that signed the letter to the president and every individual with the courage to stand up for what they believe in.
