Freshman Claudette Day clocks in at Sports’ No. 8 athlete of 2013-2014 because of her record-breaking performances.

Day joined track and field just weeks before classes began in January but has contributed multiple event titles and has put her name into the NIU record book.

In April, Day crushed two program marks. Most impressively, she placed second out of seven at the Penn Relays in the heptathlon, garnering 4,829 points, a program record.

On April 19 at the Blue Demon Invitational, Day topped the NIU record in the high jump with a leap of 5-10.00, which also earned her a trip to the MAC Outdoor Championships.

The outdoor marks that earned Day a spot in the NIU record books place her in the top three out of MAC athletes in those events, according to TFRRS.org, a website that reports collegiate track and field times.

“Claudette is a very talented athlete,” said head coach Connie Teaberry, according to a Feb. 18 Northern Star article. “She has great focus, great determination, and every time she steps out on the track she wants to win. So, she does things within the meet to put herself in contention from the beginning to the end.”
