Listeners will ‘Sway’ with debut CD of family band Merriment Tuesday

Merriment will release its debut album, “Sway,” Tuesday, and it will be sure to make listeners feel all of their emotions.

Merriment is made up of brother and sister Collin and Christie DuPree and their cousin, Remington Dupree. “Sway” is a unique blend of pop melodies with indie music; it’s a strange combination, but this band makes it work.

“I randomly thought of the name [Merriment] when I was sitting in my room,” said lead singer Christie DuPree. “I just thought it sounded like a cool name, and it went with the music.”

“[The album was inspired by] the relationships I was in and having your heart swayed for that person and letting go and both being selfish, and realizing that your heart doesnt belong to you anymore,” DuPree said.

The band manages to get deep messages in three-minute songs. They sing about falling in and out of love, and they do it so well. They do an amazing job at making what could be the saddest song into something cheerful you can tap your foot along to.

The first song of the CD, “Take Heart,” is about taking the bad parts of a relationship and trying to fix them, but it doesn’t always work out how people want it to. I like that the first song isn’t upbeat like it is on most CDs. This band isn’t afraid to take chances and open with a more serious song about trying to change for your significant other while acknowledging it doesn’t always work out how we want it to.

“Two Worlds,” a simple song, is about falling in love and how your heart gets spilt into two pieces. Listening to the lyrics makes me smile and want to hear more music from this band.

“Down by the Creek” is one of my favorite songs on the CD. Merriment manages to have whistling in the background, and any song that can successfully add someone whistling in the background understands what I love to hear. It reminds me of walking by a creek and hearing someone whistle; it fits and makes sense.

“Our producer and me both whistled on this song,” DuPree said. “This one note was too low for me to whistle so our producer said, ‘Oh, I can do it. I’m a guy.’ He did the tag line for the chorus, but I do the stuff at the begining.”

One of the things I enjoyed most about the album is Christie’s vocal talent and how she shows off her range. She can sing low and then high like it’s no big deal; she does this in some of the songs, and every time I hear her do it, it makes me smile.

“Unhinged” is a strong song to end on. It’s a song about a couple’s love being strong, and they are afraid of losing it. The music comes from a simple guitar and strings, with no drums. I love how in most of Merriment’s songs the focus seems to be on the vocals and the strings are in the background; they’re not overpowering but not totally forgotten. It’s a nice, simple sound that is easy to listen to.

“Sway’s” slow songs and soft melodies are a great listen when you want to relax.

The CD is streaming on Pandora for free for fans to enjoy.
