Women’s tennis split this weekend’s games, beating the Akron Zips Friday and falling to the Buffalo Bulls Saturday.

On Friday, the Huskies beat Akron, 4-3.

In singles, Nelle Youel defeated Olga Shkundina, 6-1, 6-0, while Cristina Alvarez knocked off Martina Zerbola, 6-3, 6-0. Stephanie McDonald also put up a win for the Huskies by defeating Caroline Harpaintner, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

“It was a solid day,” said head coach Ryun Ferrell, according to a new release. “We played very ugly, but we’ll take it. Sometimes, you keep getting the ball back and hope some things break your way, and that happened [Friday].”

Doubles went well for the Huskies as Youel and Arantza De La Torre held off Shkundina and Newnes, 8-7, while Haley Dekkinga and McDonald beat Ksenia Berestetska and Harpaintner, 8-4. On Saturday, the Huskies were beat by Buffalo, 6-1.

Dekkinga was the only Huskie to win in singles, defeating Laura Fernandez, 4-6, 7-5. NIU was unable to get any wins in doubles.

“The ball did not bounce our way [Saturday],” Ferrell said, according to a news release. “We played tough, but it felt as if we would take one step forward and two steps back. We were constantly playing from behind.”
