Alpha Phi Omega raised money for American Cancer Society by providing a pasta dinner and silent auction Wednesday to support the Relay For Life walk.
The event was held at Newman Catholic Student Center, 512 Normal Road. All proceeds go to the April 5-6 12-hour walk and the APO team is one of 26 teams that will participate in the walk.
Tickets to the dinner were sold for $5, and $1 raffle tickets were also availabl for a chance to win a gift basket. The baskets were provided by local businesses.
Mike Agosto, senior business administration major and APO member, said he came to show support.
“We are raising money for a good cause; it is a really good way to raise money with the baskets,” Agosto said.
The baskets each had a theme such as junk food, taco night, St. Patrick’s Day, body cologne and movie night. In addition, purple ribbons and treats such as cookies, candy, brownies and cupcakes were sold to raise more money.
Humphrey-McKeown also came to provide music for the event. The band consists of Tom McKeown, who played guitar, and Heather Humphrey, who sang.
“We wanted to support the event because we both have been affected by cancer in our families, and it is nice to be a part of something that raises awareness,” McKeown said.
Dane Richardson, junior media studies major and APO member, said he had no idea so many people cared about Relay For Life as much as he does.
