Students and locals hit the town Monday to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Bars such as Fatty’s, O’Leary’s and Rosy’s Roadhouse had a St. Patrick’s Day atmosphere, with green everywhere to celebrate the Irish-American holiday.

Fatty’s

Fatty’s Pub and Grille, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, celebrated St. Patrick’s day with DeKalb firefighters playing bagpipes throughout the establishment.

“A lot of people come to see the firemen play bagpipes and the green beer,” said former Fatty’s employee Andrew Hrubec.

Hrubec said people bring their families and friends to Fatty’s to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day every year. Junior business major Donald Elliott said he came to Fatty’s on St. Patrick’s Day because it’s the best pub in DeKalb.

“They have all the traditions,” Elliot said. “They have corned beef, the bagpipes, and no other bar in DeKalb has that today.”

O’Leary’s

O’Leary’s Restaurant & Pub, 260 E. Lincoln Highway, was also serving corned beef Monday.

The bartenders were dressed in green shirts and beads to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

O’Leary’s owner Mel Witmer said the St. Patrick’s Day celebration started early this year.

“People started coming in on Thursday, and it has progressively grown each day,” Witmer said. “It’s more of a St. Patrick’s weekend.”

Witmer said O’Leary’s provided customers with entertainment each day to celebrate.

“We have a lot of exhausted leprechauns,” Witmer said.

Kathryn Olsen, senior environmental studies major, said she was convinced to came out to O’Leary’s by her roommates.

“I’m really glad I came because this place is popping like green bubble gum,” Olsen said.

Rosy’s Roadhouse

Rosy’s Roadhouse Bar & Grill, 930 Pappas Drive, offered a pint of Guinness and a shot of Jameson Irish Whiskey for $7 in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.

General manager Calin Walker said she predicted a big turnout later in the night.

She said she thinks people will go out for the holiday despite it being a Monday night.

“Hopefully, since spring break ended people will want to go out and see their friends again,” Walker said.

Senior OMIS major Mike Chamberlain said he came to Rosy’s because it was convenient.

“It’s right next door, and there are $1 beers,” Chamberlain said.
