Men’s basketball set for road test

Men’s basketball is set for its final road game of the regular season as it will take on Western Michigan at 6 p.m. today in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Broncos (19-9, 12-4 MAC) are coming off a heartbreaking 96-85 overtime loss to Toledo. The Broncos led by 13 with eight minutes to play in the second half.

The Huskies (13-15, 7-9 MAC) are coming off a tough 56-52 loss at the hands of Eastern Michigan in a game where the Huskies led by 13 with 12 minutes to play in the second half.

“The Eastern Michigan game is over,” said head coach Mark Montgomery. “The players have short-term memories, anyway. This is a new game, a new opportunity. We have to do the things we did against Eastern to get the lead at Western, and we had the lead when we got out in transition. We had the lead because we had good player and ball movement, and we had the lead because we made shots.”

In the first matchup between the Huskies and Broncos, the Broncos edged the Huskies 74-71 at the Convocation Center. The Huskies fought all the way back from down 16 and had a chance to tie the game on two 3-point attempts in the final seconds of the game but came up short.

Guard David Brown was the star of the game, scoring a game-high 26 points while shooting five of eight from behind the 3-point line. The Huskies will also have to be aware of center Shayne Whittington and Connar Tava, who added 15 points and 12 points, respectively.

“Brown, Whittington and Tava; that’s their big three,” Montgomery said. “We’re going to have to be there on the catch on Brown. He’s scorching everyone in this conference. He’s almost getting 20 [points] a game. We’re going to have to be there on the catch and contest all his shots.

“Whittington, he’s an NBA player now, he has NBA scouts looking at him. So we’re going to have to push him off the block. We’re going to have to give good help. We might have to double down a little bit.”

Offensively, the Huskies have been picking their game up of late. In his last six games guard Aaric Armstead is averaging 13.3 points per game while center Jordan Threloff is averaging 12.3 points per game along with 6.6 rebounds.

With only two games remaining before the MAC Tournament begins next week, this game has huge ramifications for each team moving forward.

“Both teams are playing for a lot,” Montgomery said. “We’re playing for a home playoff game and they are playing to stay in first or tied for first place. You throw Senior Day in there for Brown and Whittington, two pretty good seniors, nothing changes.

“We’re going to have to go in there and defend and rebound. We’re definitely going to have to take care of the basketball and make sure we have great poise and patience on offense.”
