Women’s golf goes up against ‘strong field’

For the second time in 19 days, women’s golf will take its talents to Florida for the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational Sunday through Tuesday at the Juliette Falls Golf Club in Dunnellon, Fla.

NIU’s spring semester has been a different story compared to its fall schedule, when low scores came from everyone on the team. The success has included top-half finishes in its last two tournaments, the Islander Classic and the Rio Verde Invitational, which were held on Feb. 24-25 and March 7-9, respectively.

Head coach Kim Kester said NIU is looking to build on what its done so far, and thinks a key piece to its success could be the extra work the Huskies put in over break.

The three tournaments this spring have had a different Huskie finish with a team low, but the top three or four have stayed fairly consistent.

“It’s a strong field again, which is good, a few teams in the top 100,” Kester said. “We are excited to get down there, another-three day tournament. We have not seen the course. I’ve heard about it — nice course, tougher course — but the girls are playing well, so we look to carry that momentum into the event.”

The Huskies’ 54-hole total of 922 (306-317-299) at the Islander Classic is the second-best total in program history, and when the team traveled to Rio Verde, Ariz., for the Rio Verde Invitational it carded a 927 (304-323-300), which is the fourth-lowest score in NIU history.

With the weather the DeKalb area has had this winter, NIU has not been able to practice outdoors like it would like. During spring break, the Huskies spent some time in Texas in an attempt to fine tune a few things.

“We played five times throughout the week,” Kester said. “Texas is always windy this time of year. We tend to not play our best in strong wind conditions, so to be able to work on that was a big thing. And we saw a lot of positives from the girls, that is definitely going to move them forward for the remainder of the spring.”
