Triathlon brings in locals

The Sochi Winter Olympics may have been the highlight of athleticism in February, but that didn’t stop locals from pushing their own athletic abilities Sunday.

The Kishwaukee Family YMCA, 2500 W. Bethany Road, held its ninth-annual triathlon. There were 110 participants who engaged in a 10-minute swim, 20-minute bike ride and 15-minute run.

Participants were broken up into 11 age groups. The age of participants ranged from 8 to 67 years old. Heather Eade, Kishwaukee YMCA marketing and communications director, said the main goal of the event was to get people active in the winter time.

“It’s a really great event for a lot of different ability levels,” Eade said.

Six people from each age group —three men and three women— were awarded at the end of the event. The determining factor for winning was distance traveled.

Sycamore resident Rebecca Hungerford participated in the triathlon with her brother and mother.

“I figured it would be fun as a family to compete,” Hungerford said.

Sycamore resident Kyle O’Neil said he would do the triathlon again and train for it next time.

Northern Rehab, 3266 Resource Parkway in DeKalb, and Sycamore Integrated Health, 920 W. Prairie Drive, helped sponsor the event, giving massages to participants.

Participants had the option to engage in a duathlon if they did not want to participate in all three events.

“It gives people a chance to test what their fitness level is,” said Dave Dick, Kishwaukee YMCA healthy living director.
