Wrestling will face another tough meet when undefeated Missouri comes to DeKalb this weekend.

The Huskies (6-7, 1-3 MAC) will take on the Tigers (4-0, 2-0 MAC) at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Convocation Center. The Tigers have been on a hot streak lately with back-to-back wins, including a 40-0 shutout of SIUE. Mizzou had a scare against Central Michigan, but managed to win by decision 16-15.

Before matching up against the Huskies on Saturday, the Tigers have a meet against Northern Iowa Friday night. The back-to-back meets could give NIU an additional edge over Mizzou on top of their home field advantage.

The Huskies are following up a successful weekend that saw them beat Eastern Michigan, 24-9. Getting its first MAC win of the season puts NIU in a good position going forward. Head coach Ryan Ludwig hopes wrestling manages to maintain the momentum it picked up over the weekend.

“Although each match is separate, momentum does exist,” Ludwig said. “Our guys tapped into the intensity we need to last weekend. We’re going to bring that into this weekend.

“Missouri is an extremely talented team, [a] very well-coached team. What we’re going to have to do is focus on the small technical aspects of a match and managing a match.

“The intensity is there. To put yourself in a position to get your hand raised, we just have to fix some things up from the technical aspects.”

Redshirt sophomore Nick Harrison was just one of the Huskie wrestlers who had a good weekend. Harrison upset EMU’s Jared Germaine, who had been undefeated. He is hoping to carry last weekend’s success into the meet with Missouri.

“I hope that just keeps me going, fuels me to just keep going out there and beating the best there is and everything,” Harrison said. “It motivated me to work harder and get after all these big-name kids who are undefeated and ranked and just kind of put it to them.”

Junior Tyler Argue is slated to match up against Missouri’s Lavion Mayes. Argue lost to Mayes in his first match of the season, and he hopes that familiarity will give him an edge this time around.

“I’ve got a matchup from earlier this season; I’m looking to fine-tune some things,” Argue said. “I can train specifics this week. It was my first match of the season. I’ve been waiting to wrestle him again.”

The Huskies haven’t had a home meet since Jan. 4. The wrestlers will wear military appreciation- themed singlets.

“It’s nice to be home; it’s comfortable,” Ludwig said. “It’s very nice to have a lot of support from the crowd. We typically get a good crowd. It’s a military appreciation match, so hopefully we get people coming not only to support NIU wrestling, but also the troops.”
