Sincere relationships in “Shameless” season four premiere
January 12, 2014
Even though parts of the season four premiere of “Shameless” confused me, three storylines stood out: the relationship of sisters Debbie and Fiona, Veronica and Kevin’s unique situation and Carl’s devotion to his father, Frank.
I loved watching Fiona and Debbie. While there wasn’t much one-on-one interaction between the two, the little that was there was just enough. It’s interesting to see how differently they treat men in their lives. Debbie is starting to become a young woman and really wants to be with someone older than her. Fiona is starting to date her boss and finds herself falling for him more and more. While they share a similar feeling, Fiona and Debbie communicate with guys differently. Debbie’s texts are mostly innocent and about music, where Fiona’s texts are a little more dirty and adult.
I had an issue with the bizarre storyline of Kevin impregnating Veronica’s mother and facing two expecting women instead of one. When Fiona asked Veronica what she is going to do about her mother, Veronica said, “Oh, she gonna have to have an abortion. I can’t have her nasty Kev-Mama baby staring up at me. Not with my own Kev baby on my hip. I’ll just end up hating the Mama-baby and accidentally on purpose run over it in the driveway.” Although it was not meant to be sincere, it still struck a nerve with me. It was incredibly rude and surprised me. It also seemed like a concept too far-fetched. But hey, crazy things happen in life.
Carl’s devotion for his father was moving. He was so determined to not let Fiona kick Frank out. While Carl wasn’t able to do it on his own, he took care of his father to the best of his ability. Carl knew he needed his father in his life in one way or another, and it was wrong to let him die. Carl and his dad had an interesting bonding moment when Carl woke up one morning after having a wet dream. The exchange made me laugh a little because his father was so sincere, and Carl looked grateful to have his dad there at that moment. It was a nice moment between father and son.
This episode left me wanting more of these relationships in the show and wanting to see how they progress over season four.
