Track and field traveled to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin Elite Invitational where they had 11 athletes finish in the top five in their events this weekend.

In the second non-scoring meet of the indoor season, NIU had eight Huskies who recorded personal records by the end of the weekend.

“We had some bright and dim spots during the competition,” said head coach Connie Teaberry, according to an NIU news release. “We have to take the mistakes made today, pick them apart and make corrections. We’ll start with our competitive spirit and unwillingness to give up every week. We are very capable, but accepting defeat cannot be an option.”

NIU did not have its full roster in Wisconsin, as it rested a few distance and sprint athletes. They are preparing for the competitive Indiana Relays next weekend in Bloomington, Ind.

Senior Rebecca Cronin placed first out of four in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.20. She edged out Marquette’s Nicole Ethier for her first indoor crown of the 2014 season. Julie Cronin came in third place, crossing the line at 2:18.22.

In the distance group, sophomore Hannah Savage earned third place out of 11 in the mile. The mile runner crossed the line with a time of 5:14.15.

NIU had all of its multi-event Huskies participate in the long jump. Out of the six who jumped, three finished in the top 10 of the 22 women who took part.

Claudette Day was the top NIU long jumper. She took third place with a jump of 18-05.75. Day is now less than 3 inches shy of Brittany Houghton’s 2008 record jump of 18-08.50.

Day also got third place out of 24 in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.88. Teammate Latesha Bigby finished in fifth place, timing in at 8.93 in the hurdle event.

Bigby took home a second-place crown in the 200 meter dash, clocking in at 26.10. Freshman Alexandria Isom finished with a 26.24 time, taking third place. Bigby was also in the 60-meter dash, capturing sixth place out of 19 sprinters to finish the sprint in 7.90.

In the field events, junior Sidra Sherrill, who has led the Huskies in the shot put event each meet this season, continued that in Wisconsin, finishing in fourth place out of 17 athletes. The thrower’s best toss was a 44-10.25.

In the 4X4 relay event, the NIU team of the Cronin sisters, Bigby and Isom finished in fifth place out of seven, clocking in at 4:06.21. This was the second-best performance of the indoor season for the Huskies.
