Memorable pop star duets deliver attitude
January 22, 2014
The newest diva duet, Shakira and Rihanna, is not the first prima donna group to create an energetic, hip-shaking song. Here are my top diva duets.
5. “The Boy Is Mine” by Brandy and Monica
This is the earliest diva duet I can remember and one of the best ones. In the music video, Monica and Brandy fight over the same man. Mekhi Phifer plays the “boy” and wears a satin shirt. Remember when those were cool?
4. “Lady Marmalade” by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mýa and Pink
This song is not a duet, but it is one of the most diva-packed songs of all time. Christina’s pink and blonde afro really takes this to another level.
3. “Telephone” by Lady Gaga and Beyoncé
This is one of the newer duets on the list, but it is one of the most insane ones. It is about Gaga trying to answer her phone while she is on the dance floor. The nine-minute music video shows Gaga and Beyoncé wreaking havoc in a restaurant. This really skyrocketed Gaga’s crazy music videos. Watching it now is funny because viewers thought, “How can she get crazier than this?”
2. “Beautiful Liar” by Beyoncé and Shakira
Beyoncé and Shakira in the same music video shaking their hips like there is no tomorrow might be one of the greatest things to come from 2000s pop music.
During the video, the two divas break down in the most perfect dance number in matching outfits, and it’s everything I love about pop music.
At one point in the video the divas are dancing in the rain in long black dresses; it just makes everything right in the world.
1.“Do What U Want” by Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera
This song was first recorded with Lady Gaga and R. Kelly. On an episode of “The Voice” Lady Gaga and Xtina joined diva superpowers for this performance.
I love the original version, but these two ladies have something special together. My favorite part of the performance came when Aguilera cradled Gaga’s head. It was the best three seconds of live TV ever made.
