Pass/fail: NIU takes two days off school, Be cautious of dangerous weather

By Shaz Sheikhali

Pass

All the Facebook statuses and tweets out there are about the two snow days NIU and a majority of the Chicagoland area have received this lovely week.

Having two days off is more perfect than waking up to a sunny morning of birds chirping and Cinderella singing “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.”

Unfortunately, I don’t live in a world where birds sing to me and mice make me a dress.

I exist in reality, where homework and my job are my past, present and future.

I bet a majority of you had homework you wish you had a few more days to work on. Or you probably wanted a few more days to get some beauty sleep in.

Fortunately, Khione, the Greek nymph of snow, answered our prayers and wishes.

She sent some snow and crazy wind chill.

I am beyond stoked; this crazy cold and snow has given me and countless others two days off.

I know I am going to enjoy this time off cozying up to Plato’s “Meno.” Not.

Fail

While I gave the crazy weather a pass, I am going to contradict myself and also give it a fail.

The weather fails because many cars were stuck in ditches and abandoned for the night.

Unfortunately, the icy roads also claimed the life of Terry R. Gile, 67, of DeKalb.

Gile was driving on Route 23 when a car swerved into his lane. He hit the car.

Gile was transported to Kishwaukee Hospital and died a short time later.

To prevent more tragic accidents, city and campus employees are out in this treacherous weather, trying to ensure the safety of locals.

Let’s keep them in our thoughtss, and maybe even send some hot cocoa from Starbucks their way.

This one goes out to all the snow plow drivers and police officers who are out there keeping DeKalb as safe as can be.
