The universe of Warcraft has grown a little more chaotic with the opening of “Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.”.

“Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft” is a digital collectible card game that has taken gamers by storm. This free-to-play game has been in closed beta for months but was changed to open beta on Jan. 21.

While digital collectible card games have a very niche audience, the popularity of “Hearthstone” became an Internet cultural phenomenon. As of early November, there was an estimated one million people playing in the closed beta. The exclusivity of this game only benefited its popularity as players of all types clamored to get keys for the beta.

This card game revolves around players picking a class from “World of Warcraft” and building a deck of cards. Each class comes with a unique ability as well as spells that fit its theme.

After building a deck, players queue up for a match against another player of similar skill level. They battle, taking turns until one is capable of depleting the other’s life.

It has been incredible to see novice and expert card game players pick up this game for the first time and find it fun. This game is accessible to any kind of gamer looking for a quick and competitive game.

The amount of strategy in “Hearthstone” at all levels is what makes it such a compelling title. While my ideal strategy involves draining my opponent’s health, the next player may aim to control the board and create large combos of cards. With each game, win or lose, there is plenty to learn, and recognizing mistakes is easy due to the card game format.

Another interesting feature is the competitive Arena mode. This mode consists of players having to choose from three random classes and then build their deck. To build their decks, the game makes players choose between three cards and they’re only able to take one. With each win the player guarantees him- or herself a better prize once the mode ends, which happens after three losses or 12 wins.

Simplicity and strategy is the name of the game when it comes to “Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.”
