NIU likely to see more rain

DeKalb is likely to see more rain in the coming week after a damp weekend.

A wet and rainy Thursday afternoon featured students in Halloween costumes, running makeup, umbrellas and “wellies.” Richard Castro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the temperature at this time of year has been mild but there has been more rain.

“It’s a pretty heavy rain amount,” Castro said. “[It’s] not very common to see 1-plus inches of rain this time of year.”

DeKalb will see temperatures in the high 50’s with showers likely Tuesday night and Wednesday. The amount of rainfall can be difficult to determine, Castro said.

“It’s hard to say with any confidence how much rainfall we will have. We forecasted 2-and-a-half inches for the Chicago area but got 4,” Castro said.

Junior nutrition major Amanda Knerr said people suggest she take the bus to class, but Knerr would much rather walk.

“The busses are crowded and never on time,” she said. The Arizona native is happy about the higher-than-average temperatures and said the rain is not all that bad. “I like it hot, but I did get to sport my fancy rain boots.”

The heavy rainfall would not deter the sorority girls from Alpha Sigma Alpha from raising funds for their charities. They were holding a “pie in the face” event in the Martin Luther King Commons.

Layla Shayeb, junior political science major, said she noticed students were less likely to flick a pie their way with the weather.

“[The weather] is affecting us in a way that not enough people are walking around,” Shayeb said.

Charles White, senior pre-physical therapy major, normally rides his bike to class, and the rain does not change that.

“If there is lightning I wouldn’t bike. I just prepare myself with jacket and coat,” he said. “Usually when it gets colder and more wet I have a harder time coming to class.”

Shayeb does not see it that way.

“We are just playing in the rain,” she said. “Some people brought umbrellas, but you don’t even need them.”
