Volunteers pack lunches to feed thousands of children

It took volunteers from all over DeKalb County only four days to make enough meals to feed 2,260 children for one year.

Volunteers helped pack meals for Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit organization that helps feed children all over the world. About 4,000 volunteers from throughout the county gathered at the Cornerstone Christian Academy, 355 N. Cross St., on Thursday and The Suter Company, 1015 W. Bethany Road, Friday to Sunday.

“It’s very uplifting,” said Tim Suter, president and CEO of The Suter Company. “There were a lot of kids volunteering, probably a lot of them for the first time, and it’s just so neat to see that.”

About 504,000 of the 825,000 meals packed over the weekend will go to the relief effort in the Philippines after the typhoon devastated the archipelago. The rest of the meals will go to countries around the world. This is the fourth year the Feed My Starving Children meal packing event has been held in DeKalb County.

“I like it. It’s very fun and helpful,” said DeKalb resident Briana Lindhart.

The meals contain rice, potatoes, soy and 25 vitamins and minerals. One meal feeds a child for an entire day.

“We already have plans to do it again next year,” said Heidi Wright, vice president of sales and marketing for The Suter Company. “I see this as being something we will do every single year.”

Each meal costs 22 cents, and about $185,000 was raised. T-shirts were sold for $20, which would be enough money to feed 90 children. DeKalb-Sycamore Chevrolet Cadillac GMC donated a vehicle to be raffled off. Raffle ticket sales generated more than $53,000.

“There’s such a spirit of generosity here, and people really do want to make a difference,” Wright said.
