Prep vehicles, safety kits for colder winter

Preparing your car now will protect it come a cold winter.

NIU meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste said this winter is expected to feature periods of intense cold, two to three snowstorms, 4 inches of snow or more and a lot of wind. In addition to dressing for the weather, drivers need to prepare their cars.

Leslie Piatt, service adviser at auto repair shop Motor Works, said drivers should check their coolant, hoses and belts. Piatt said tire pressure and tread are also vital.

“There are different tools you can use. The penny trick is pretty famous,” Piatt said. “You can look online for where on Lincoln’s face the tread is supposed to be. There are ways to do this where you can cheat and you don’t need the tools.”

To check the tires, put a penny head down between tire tread. If Lincoln’s face is fully visible, the tires need to be replaced.

John Volkert, Barb City Automotive owner, said drivers should keep supplies like jumper cables, a shovel and a blanket in their car in case of an emergency.

“The blanket is important in case you get stuck somewhere,” Volkert said. “It would also be smart to keep a little bit of kitty litter; you can use that under your tires to add traction if needed.”
