‘Almost Human’ gears toward sci-fi crowd

By Josh Alfrey

“Almost Human” fuses a cop show to a science fiction, dystopia future swarmed with androids — and it makes for one interesting show.

Fox’s new program, “Almost Human,” premiered its pilot Sunday. John Kennex, played by Karl Urban, is a battle-weary cop who makes his return to the force after being in a coma. Once he returns he learns every officer is forced to have an android partner. His partner, an emotionally functional and out-of-date robot named Dorian, played by Michael Ealy.

While the show didn’t bring anything groundbreaking in terms of premise, the actors shine in the production. The chemistry between Ealy and Urban is nothing to be undervalued. Ealy provides an emotional performance which contrasts well with Urban’s icy demeanor.

Ealy and Urban’s dynamic isn’t just because of their strong acting, though. Their definitely characters work well together. They benefit from some great dialogue and characterization right as the two meet each other.

Throughout the progression of the episode, it leaves the audience thinking Dorian is closer to human than anyone else. Kennex becomes more of the android, refusing to account for human emotions. The cynical cop begins to see the world isn’t as black and white as he may think it is.

Outside of the actors’ strong chemistry, “Almost Human” benefits greatly from its experienced creators. Viewers cannot scoff at the team of J.H. Wyman and J.J. Abrams when it comes to working in television and movies.

Abrams is the executive producer and shows the audience “Almost Human’s” huge budget with flashy CGI and detailed locations. The show’s production value was one of its most attention-grabbing points.

Wyman, the creator, also has a great track record coming into “Almost Human.” With Wyman’s work on Abrams’ “Fringe” during its near-five year run, Wyman brings a wealth of sci-fi knowledge.

These two know how to put together one fun sci-fi show. This new series is popcorn television at its finest. It may not bring anything innovative in terms of plot and genre, but it brings plenty of action with fine acting.

If viewers are looking for a buddy cop drama with robotic implants, “Almost Human” is the perfect creation. Watch the show 7 p.m. Sundays on Fox. Another episode of “Almost Human” will play at 7 p.m. Monday for the premiere.
