Cops: Pot theft led to Travel Inn gunfire

Police have made 12 arrests in regard to an incident where at least one shot was fired at about noon Friday at the Travel Inn, about a half mile from NIU.
A theft of pot resulted in a fight that led to the gunfire in the Travel Inn parking lot, 1116 W. Lincoln Highway, according to police. DeKalb Police Cmdr. John Petragallo said one person was hit with a gun, resulting in a minor head injury. Another person had a minor hand injury.
The pot theft happened during a drug transaction, according to a news release from DeKalb police. After the theft, the victim asked several people to assist him in confronting the thief at the motel. The person who fired the gun was with the group that came to the hotel to retaliate, according to police, and the group that possessed the firearm fled after a shot was fired.
Police searched an apartment and a vehicle, finding the gun used during the shooting at the apartment, according to police.
The following people were charged:
• Aaron J. Harris, 19, of DeKalb, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery public way and mob action.
• Tyrone M. Sally, 19, of DeKalb, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery public way and mob action.
• Abreon B. Starks, 19, of DeKalb, was charged with mob action.
• Gilbert G. Burch, 18, of DeKalb, was charged with mob action.
• David I. Cortina, 19, of DeKalb, was charged with mob action.
• Maceo Penn, 18, of Chicago, was charged with mob action.
• Edward K. Reid, 18, of Chicago, was charged with mob action.
• Maurice Johnson, 18, of Chicago, was charged with mob action.
• Isaiah L. Lee, 19, of DeKalb, was charged with mob action.
• Julio A. Martinez, 20, of Zion, was charged with unlawful delivery of cannabis within 1,000 feet of a school (less than 10 grams).
• Bryce A. Meinert, 20, of Freeport, was charged with theft.
• Tanesha J. McCrary, 19, of DeKalb, was charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
NIU police issued a safety bulletin with information about the incident Friday, but NIU Police Chief Tom Phillips said a text alert was not issued because there was “no immediate threat” based on the information available to police.
Police reported finding a meth lab in a hotel room at the Travel Inn Oct. 27. One man was arrested in that incident, though police said they would expect more arrests.
