Local artists were empowered by sharing what they are afraid of through art at the What Are You Afraid Of? exhibit Tuesday at the House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway.

The event featured live music performed by bands The Earth Program and Doleful Lions and poetry readings. The night was organized by senior illustration major Hayley Devitt, who sought out work from local female artists.

“My hope is to give some artists a platform to show their work,” Devitt said. “It’s been a goal of mine to put together an exhibition.”

Various pieces of art, including photography and oil paintings, were displayed.

The event showed the spirit of what the House Cafe is, said Rachel Silverstein, senior special education major.

“The gallery experience looks good for the artists, and it’s a fun way to share with the public what we love to do,” Devitt said. “Halloween is coming up and the bands are a good fit because some songs are horror-themed.”

Silverstein said she likes the idea of showing peoples worst fears, as some can be relatable.

“I like some of the artwork and I think they have done a good job for having a showcase for local artists,” said alumnus Dan Knewitz.
