Football dominates Eastern Michigan

No. 17 football posted its highest point total of the season Saturday with its dominating 59-20 victory over Eastern Michigan at Huskie Stadium.

With the win, the Huskies (8-0, 4-0 MAC) won their 24th consecutive home game at Huskie Stadium and increased their nation-leading MAC conference winning streak to 21 games.

The Huskies came out of the gates and set the tone early, scoring the first 21 points of the game. Redshirt senior quarterback Jordan Lynch threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter, a 5-yard strike to junior wide receiver Da’Ron Brown and a 10-yard pass to true freshman running back Joel Bouagnon.

On the Huskies’ next drive, Lynch did it with his legs as he ran into the end zone from 30 yards out.

“I thought they did a good job of starting off quick,” said EMU coach Ron English. “They ran some formations they had not shown. I thought that … unnerved our guys a little bit.”

In the second quarter, the Huskies used some trickery, as Lynch showed off a skill set no one had seen. Junior wide receiver Tommylee Lewis took a handoff from Lynch and threw a 17-yard touchdown to Lynch as he dove into the end zone. It was Lewis’ first touchdown pass of his career as well as Lynch’s first career touchdown reception.

Lewis is the first non-quarterback to throw a touchdown for the Huskies since Jasmin Hopkins in 2010.

“We practiced it all week,” Lynch said. “It’s fun to do something like that, to act like a receiver. Any time you bust out a trick play it’s fun.”

Before the half, Lynch hooked up with redshirt sophomore Juwan Brescacin on a 16-yard touchdown pass, and senior kicker Mathew Sims hit a 28-yard field goal as time expired. The Huskies went into the locker room leading the Eastern Michigan, 38-3.

After the Eagles hit a 32-yard field goal, the Huskies answered when Lynch hooked up with Brown for the second time on a 28-yard touchdown pass.

Lynch finished with 223 passing yards and tied his career high with four passing touchdowns. He ran for 99 yards and one touchdown and had a 17-yard touchdown reception. He totaled six touchdowns and became the first player to catch, rush and throw for a touchdown since Ohio’s Boo Williams in 2010.

With Lynch on the sidelines and the game well in hand, backup quarterbacks redshirt sophomore Matt McIntosh and redshirt freshman Drew Hare saw action.

On McIntosh’s first pass attempt of the game, he threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman receiver Matt Williams. It was Williams’ first career touchdown reception.

Hare came out on the next drive and followed suit, throwing a touchdown of his own to redshirt junior fullback Ricky Connors for 11 yards. It was Hare’s first touchdown pass and Connors’ first career touchdown reception.

“That was something I was really pleased with, pleased with both of them,” said coach Rod Carey. “They ran the offense…. That was what I wanted to see out of them, is can they run our offense and what we do and how we do it at the pace we do it. It’s one thing to run it in practice and another thing to run it in a game, and I was pleased with both of them.”
