Andre Gomez was “distraught” over his and Morgan Chaney’s breakup prior to their deaths, according to DeKalb police.

Chaney, 26, of DeKalb, was found dead in her home with gunshot wounds early Sept. 7. Gomez, 31, of DeKalb, was found dead in Chaney’s car in Shabbona with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound later that day. The two had dated “for several years” prior to a recent breakup, and Commander John Petragallo said police are “comfortable saying this is a murder-suicide.”

“We believe Andre Gomez killed Ms. Chaney,” Petragallo said.

Petragallo said police believe Chaney was killed between 12:30 and 1 a.m. A witness said he or she witnessed Gomez arrive home in Chaney’s car at about 1 a.m., and Gomez “made statements that he had just come from the victim’s house,” Petragallo said. Gomez’s bike was found near Chaney’s home.

At about 2:21 a.m. police received a call from a person who they believe to be Gomez. The caller reported a crime had been committed at Chaney’s home.

“Nothing suspicious was found” when the residence was investigated, Petragallo said. “Officers looked in the windows, didn’t see anything suspicious.”

Officers then contacted Chaney’s family members, and they said they would check the home in the morning. They found Chaney’s body there at about 6 a.m.

Firearms evidence from Chaney’s home is consistent with the gun found in the car with Gomez, and Chaney’s phone — which was missing from her home — was found in the car with Gomez.

The investigation into the deaths is ongoing.
