G4 diminishes as Esquire rises
September 15, 2013
As a fan of the G4 network, it’s disheartening to see a network I’ve loved rapidly decline in quality.
It has been months since it aired its last episodes of original content. Esquire had its sights set on re-branding G4 as its very own Esquire Network. But Sept. 9 Esquire announced its network will launch on the Style Network rather than G4. This means Esquire may be more successful, while G4 will live on instead of being replaced. Unfortunately, even though it will live on, there are no plans to add original content to the network.
NBCUniversal chairman Bonnie Hammer made the switch to avoid similar networks. Style, like E!, Oxygen and Bravo, aimed toward a female audience, but NBCUniversal can use the Esquire network as an opportunity to bring in upscale lifestyle shows for men. The difference between that and the G4 network is G4 catered to a nerd-like demographic by providing content that focused on the Internet, television, video games and more. The general manager of G4 and Esquire seems to focus only on the development of Esquire. The general manager’s lack of focus toward G4 angers viewers like myself. Fans of “Attack of the Show” and “X-Play” like me are wondering if the two shows were cancelled for no reason. That would mean the show’s staff lost their jobs when they didn’t have to.
The G4 Network plays reruns of “Cops,” “Lost,” “Heroes” and many others. I watched that channel Monday through Friday for six years. It was sad to hear my favorite shows were ending and the channel would fade away. Now that the network is here to stay, I’m insulted my favorite shows were arbitrarily cancelled. I hope general manager Adam Stotsky finds a way to make it up to fans.
