‘Civilization 5’ expansion creates new world
July 8, 2013
The world of politics, war and strategy changes as Sid Meier’s “Civilization V” releases its second expansion pack, “Brave New World,” today.
“Civilization V” is a turn-based strategy game where players lead a nation from 4,000 B.C. through 2,050 A.D. With this new and improved expansion, gamers chose from 43 nations and various historical leaders in the battle for the top. Be it through strong diplomacy, the hammer of war or the power of science, players attempt to become the most powerful nation on the map.
This unique expansion expands players’ choices when growing their nation and seizing power from their opponents. “Brave New World” allows leaders to specialize in cultural expansion in an attempt to win through cultural domination: The first nation to create great works and wonders from artists, musicians and writers take over the world through global tourism.
New systems of trade in the expansion also have a significant effect on the gamer’s experience. Players can strategize trade routes by analyzing their caravans’ and cargo ships’ strengths and weaknesses. Will devising shorter and more secure routes provide larger advantages? These new trade routes will affect economical and influential decisions made by each player.
“Brave New World” supplements the current game’s diplomatic process by bringing together nations in dynamic ways. Once the player’s nation has met all other nations on the map, the player can choose to create a World Congress. Much like the United Nations, the World Congress makes decisions on a global scale.
The World Congress’ powers allow nations to vote on a number of choices, including creating the World’s Fair and enforcing trade embargoes upon competing players. Each decision made by the World Congress changes the outcome of the game, and a diplomatic victory can be attained when a player is voted World Leader through the congress.
The “Civilization V” expansion pack is turning the original game on its head with all these new mechanics and content. The new play styles and storylines keep unique games like this afloat and attractive to prospective players. This is an amazing example of an expansion pack done right.
This is a great for any history buff looking for a slow-paced game with incredible depth. Sid Meier’s “Civilization V: Brave New World” gives players more of what they want while also improving what they already love.
