‘The Maze’ magician wows NIU students

Screaming can be heard in the audience. Magician Jim Munroe has just stuck a nail into his nose and he is asking an audience member to “squeeze tightly” to help him pull it out. This is how he proposed to his wife, he tells the audience.
Munroe performed his magic show, “The Maze,” at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium.
When Munroe first came onto the stage he warned everyone the show that was to take place was not a magic show but a social experiment.
The Maze is an experience that some may claim escapes the boundaries of any single definition. WhatIsTheMaze.com writes, “Maze presents a unique blend of illusion, intuition, psychology, humor, mystery and danger.”
Munroe goes through the show with a variety of tricks. One trick involves bringing a couple on stage as he tells the couple to close their eyes tight. He asks the audience to be quiet and begins tapping one of them on the shoulder. Their eyes still closed, he asked whoever felt the tapping to raise their hand. The audience waited and stared in disbelief when both raised their hands. This went on three more times and each time both the participants raised their hands.
“My favorite part was before the show, it happened in the New Hall cafeteria when Jim picked a table of guys and had them choose a fork,” said Laura Gallaher, sophomore mechanical engineering major. “He shocked everyone and actually bent the fork and broke it. It was crazy.”
Once the first part of the show ended, Munroe gave the audience permission to leave if they didn’t want to be a part of the next half, which featured Munroe explaining why he tours schools.
Once the intermission was over, Munroe told the audience how he battled a rare form of leukemia and he believes “The Maze” shows a journey through life and how a person overcomes and deals with problems.
“I became a magician because I was curious,” Munroe says. “I started doing tours because it fell on me… people wanted to see the magic but then they also were curious on who is this guy, and I started the second part of the show.”
