Track and field to compete in the GVSU Big Meet

The Huskies will travel to Michigan to take part in the GVSU Big Meet, hosted by Grand Valley State University, this weekend.

NIU last competed two weeks ago in the Indiana relays. Eight athletes had top 10 finishes, and the team was led by senior Rebecca Cronin, who finished first in the 600 meters with a time of 1:35.71.

The top finishing Huskie on day two at the Indiana relays was sophomore shot-putter Sidra Sherrill, who placed seventh with a personal best throw of 46-9.00.

Head coach Connie Teaberry said her team has to become more consistent if it wants to build off the success it had from two weeks ago.

“This weekend at the Grand Valley meet it’s gonna be important for our athletes to stay focused and to continue competing,” Teaberry said. “The mental aspect of competition…has been kind of what we’ve lacked in some of the meets. Being consistent [is something we need to improve upon]. So, this meet we need to, you know, stay on that path and keep focused with consistency.”

Senior sprinter Cronin said that in order for the team to be successful this weekend, confidence will be important.

“Everyone just needs to remain confident and go into the meet knowing that they’re gonna do better and hopefully qualify for [the] MAC [tournament],” Cronin said.

The MAC indoor track and field championships are just two weeks away. They will be held on Feb. 22 and 23 at Eastern Michigan University.

Teaberry said that despite having a week away from competition, her team can still use the momentum they gained at the University of Indiana relays.

“They’ve worked very hard to improve upon the competition they had before at Indiana,” Teaberry said. “So, we’re looking to get back on the track to see how we fare after that week…of no competition and being able to get quality practices in.”
