DeKalb Park District to host Zumba Parties
January 14, 2013
The DeKalb Park District will be hosting Zumba Parties the first Friday of every month at its sports and recreation center, 1765 S. Fourth St.
Participation in the Zumba parties will cost $5.
Zumba is a form of exercise that blends international Latin music and modern music.
The Zumba parties began at the DeKalb Park District more than a year ago; the idea was introduced by Zumba instructor Jill Farris.
Colleen Belmont, program director of the DeKalb Park District, said the park district was looking for a way to introduce the dancing exercise to people who were unfamiliar with it.
“We were looking for ways to publicize Zumba to the community,” Belmont said. “The Zumba parties are a fun and innovative way to introduce the activity to people.”
Farris said the class is a way for people to try Zumba without feeling obligated to make a long-term commitment to it.
“Most people who think of Zumba think that they have to be in shape or have to sign up for multiple classes,” Farris said. “The Zumba parties do not require registration so people do not have to come to every Zumba party.”
The next Zumba party will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 1, at the DeKalb Park District Sports and Recreation Center, 1765 S. Fourth St.
Comfortable clothing, tennis shoes and a water bottle are recommended for any participants.
