Election Night
November 7, 2012
It was too big to fit in letter to the editor, and cut off most of the paper. Sorry about submitting it through this. I am a senor at NIU , I am 21 years old and I felt like this needed to be heard. I write this as the elections have come to a close; I have nothing to say but disappointment in the great United States of America. Our country has reelected Barrack Obama to a second term. In high school I supported Obama; he talked about change in a time where our nation was falling apart. At that time I was 17 and couldn’t vote, but I supported his campaign. Now four years later our country hasn’t even come close to coming out of the hole it fell into. The change just never came. All that occurred was political games and using Obama as a poster boy for America. Now I know everyone has been arguing about the statistics about how unemployment has decreased and our recession is ending, but that’s the problem they are just statistics. Statistics that can be twisted and turned into making people see the side that’s presenting them. The one thing I want to stress is that for instance unemployment is calculated by people that are informing the government that they do not have a job. This is usually taken from the unemployment benefit claims. Now that people have run out of unemployment benefits they have stopped reporting to the government because they no longer can receive help. With this mass amount of claims no longer there makes the unemployment rate look like it has dropped. With that being said our current president hasn’t helped out us as we had thought and without a care our country reelected him. I just want people to ask themselves has your life or the people you care for lives’ gotten any better? We are still a country of massive debt, a huge amount of foreclosures, and people having jobs that can barely provide a source to live. Everyone knows someone who has lost their job and house has been foreclosed on. Why as Americans are we not angry with the lack of progression we have been given? To the college students I attend NIU with, the world outside is not welcoming to us after we receive our degrees. We will walk out of this educational institution with some form of debt and after that we will have to cross our fingers hoping to find a stable job that makes us enough money to pay off our student loans. Let alone try to move out of your parent’s house and be able to support yourself. A few people out of the many I have made small talk with while attending NIU, are very ignorant about the status of this election. Some comments I have heard was just saying that Romney was a rich guy that didn’t care about us. How can we be this ignorant? This is our future we are voting for, the hopes that we can all reach the American dream one day. We should be considering both sides and looking for the best candidate for the job. The two party system has wrecked our country with the notion that you should pick one side and stick with it, while not even investigating what the other side’s ideas are. Now, from what I have read in papers, online and seen on the news programs, (I try to watch all three major news outlets to get the most balanced view I can.) Obama have spent a lot of taxpayer money bailing out Wall Street and going on vacation. The one vacation trip the Obama family took to Spain cost the taxpayers $467,000 in just transportation and security expenses. I will leave the link to the article at the end of this. Other sources claim the Obama’s spending had reached over 1.4 billion in transport costs, extra hired staff, and other personal pleasures. While these figures may be overblown, even if it is half the number said, it is a staggering amount of money abused. The worst part about the bailouts was that executives were able to take their bonuses after being a part of running the economy into the ground. What the hell? Why didn’t anyone in our government stop these people from abusing our family’s hard working money? With that being said, how can we stand for this waste of time and resources by our president? We just forget and keep going on with our lives, even though we are being taken advantage of. Not saying that Romney would have fixed everything, but it was at least a possibility to get a president out of the white house that hasn’t helped our country develop the way it should be. To agree with Mr. Obama’s presidential campaign motto we do need change, but unfortunately he hasn’t been the one to make it happen.
