‘Boy Meets World’ to get sequel

By Jen Weddle

Children of the ’90s will react with either joy or skepticism to the news that Boy Meets World is coming back for a sequel called Girl Meets World.

Boy Meets World was a comedy about a character named Cory Matthews (Ben Savage). The show started with Cory as a young boy in middle school and centered around the lessons he learned in life. By the end of the series, Cory and Topanga (Danielle Fishel), Cory’s childhood sweetheart, were married and living together.

Although the name of the sequel isn’t very clever and the plot sounds even less original, who cares? If it means I don’t have to watch reruns of Boy Meets World on MTV anymore, I’m happy.

Entertainment Weekly reported that the show will consist of two main characters: Riley Matthews, the 13-year-old daughter of Cory and Topanga, and Maya, her “dark and edgy” best friend (sounds a little like Shawn, Cory’s best friend, who was played by Rider Strong). Cory will be working at Riley and Maya’s middle school as their history teacher. It sounds like Cory is going to become the next Mr. Feeny (William Daniels) by giving advice to his daughter and her peers.

Michael Jacobs, the original executive producer of Boy Meets World, is the one who decided to take on the project, according to HollywoodReporter.com. It’s also clear that development is currently in very early stages. Casting is underway and there has been no official word on whether Savage or Fishel will return to the new series. Savage, Fishel and famous fans of the series have been teasing the public with a few tweets and hinting at what may be a Boy Meets World reunion.

Fishel teased fans with this tweet:

@DanielleFishel: “Just want you guys to know that @BenSavage and I have talked and we’ve decided…Thanksgiving is going to be delicious this year!”

Brooklyn Decker, famous for roles in Just Go With It and Battleship, tweeted:

@BrooklynDecker: Why is Boy Meets World trending?? Perhaps (dare I say) a reunion…? Please tell me this is why…”

Savage responded with:

@BenSavage: “You never know, Brooklyn ;)”

These tweets sound like some of our favorite Boy Meets World characters have taken an interest in the new series, but what about Mr. Feeny, Angela (Trina McGee-Davis), Shawn and Eric (Will Friedle)? Are they going to have roles in Girl Meets World? I guess fans of the ’90s will just have to wait and see as further information becomes available and the development of the series progresses.

I may feel a little old watching some of my favorite characters from my childhood raise a child of their own, but I think television needs a show that can connect with viewers.
