Major donation allows Ellwood House to redesign historic garden
November 12, 2012
A donation from DeKalb residents William and Patsy Lundberg will help to recreate the historic flower garden at the Ellwood-Nehring House, 509 N. First St.
The Lundberg’s donation will go toward recreating and redesigning the south lawn of the carriage building on the Ellwood property, according to a Monday news release. The new garden will incorporate the remaining elements from the original 1905 Ellwood garden, including a sundial platform. Brian Reis, executive director of the Ellwood House Museum, said the new garden will be much more public than the original.
“We want to take the same principles that formed the early garden, but instead of creating a private garden, we’ll turn it inside out, making a very public place for all to enjoy,” Reis said in the release.
The donation is one of several to the Ellwood House recently, as Shirley Hamilton Nehring donated the nearby Ellwood-Nehring property to the Museum. The property will be incorporated into a single, renovated museum campus by 2013, according to the release. The new garden is just one of many projects being funded, and donations to the museum are always accepted.
