An NIU student was found dead at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house on Friday, according to the NIU police.

David R. Bogenberger, 19, was found to be unresponsive when police arrived at the scene 10:14 a.m., according to the DeKalb Police Department. DeKalb Fire Department paramedics and DeKalb police officers responded to the scene. Bogenberger was pronounced dead at about 10:45 a.m. by DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller.

DeKalb Police Lt. Jason Leverton said there were no obvious signs of foul play and no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. Leverton said police found evidence of alcohol use near Bogenberger’s body, and they know he was one of several students invited to the fraternity house Thursday night.

An autopsy was performed Saturday, and Miller said he found nothing unusual. A cause of death will not be declared until toxicology samples are returned, he said. The results are expected within the next 10 to 14 days.

David’s mother, Ruth Bogenberger, said the family is “shocked and distraught” by its loss.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Gary Bogenberger, David’s father, said his son was a triplet and decided to study finance at NIU after his high school graduation.

Brad Hoey, director of communications and marketing, said NIU will support people affected by David Bogenberger’s death.

“It’s very sad news,” Hoey said. “Our condolences go to the family and friends involved. We will continue to support them with our thoughts and prayers.”

The Counseling and Student Development Center is prepared to offer its services to friends and fellow students, Hoey said.

NIU President John Peters issued a statement on Friday offering his support, according to NIU Today.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with David’s family and friends as they cope with this difficult loss,” Peters said. “Please know that your grief is shared collectively by the NIU community.”

Alexander Jandick, president of the NIU Pi Kappa Alpha chapter, said in a news release the chapter has ceased chapter operations and will give its full cooperation to local authorities and the investigation.

According to a a Daily Herald obituarary, Bogenberger enjoyed watching films and playing baseball. He was involved heavily in activities at Palatine High School, which he graduated from in June.

Bogenberger was also involved in his high school’s DECA club. The club trains and guides students interested in leadership and entrepreneurship. Donations in David’s honor may be made to DECA, Inc. in lieu of flowers, according to the obituary. Donation information is available at deca.org/donate.

Bogenberger also volunteered throughout his community and served as a classroom assistant for his local church.
