The NIU ROTC program sent cadets to Macomb for an opportunity to earn a foreign military badge, according to a NIU ROTC news release.
The German Armed Forces Proficiency badge was earned by nine cadets in the NIU ROTC program. The badge is a decoration awarded to German soldiers who meet rigorous physical standards. The badge can also be awarded to non-German soldiers.
A candidate may choose from a menu of events that focus on their strengths, according to NIU ROTC. The events included numerous track and field events, like the long jump, high jump, shot put and 3,000 meter run. Cadets were also tested on their pistol marksmanship and swimming skills.
The final event was a march with at least 33 pounds in a pack on a 7.5 mile course within a two hour limit.
