Phi Sigma Kappa takes home IFC championship

Some will win, others will lose.

All Sports Trophies were given by the Interfraternity Council (IFC) to reward fraternities Sunday. Fraternities that accumulated the most points throughout the school year in selected intramural sports won awards. The ceremony was held in the Campus Life Building, Room 100.

This year’s first place winner was Phi Sigma Kappa, and there was a two-way tie for second place between Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Pi Kappa Alpha.

“I’m not surprised by the results,” said Ryan Thermen, Alpha Epsilon Pi member and junior elementary education major. “This isn’t the first year my fraternity didn’t win anything.”

In order to win the overall competition, a certain amount of points are earned for different sporting events.

“It’s a numbers game,” said Jorge Solorio, Omega Delta member and sophomore history major. “Fraternities with larger numbers have a greater chance of having more athletically inclined people who then go on to win points for their team.”

Sports put aside, Nicholas Pascolla, IFC vice president of community events, said the awards ceremony was about bragging rights and is used as tool for recruitment. When possible pledges are looking at the different fraternities at one of their Greek community events and see the huge trophies fraternities get, they may become interested. Pascolla said the awards ceremony also helps the intramural program and spreads school spirit.

“We’ve done this around 10 years at least,” said Pascolla. “It’s a running tradition that most seem to get really into.”

Solorio said he hopes to participate in as many activities as he can and to do his best to win next year.
