NIU Opera Theater shows off student skills with Sondheim

The NIU Opera Theater is bringing Sondheim’s music to campus.

In their new production, A Little Night of Sondheim, a cast of about 15 students performs numerous works from composer Stephen Sondheim, who is widely known for composing music for shows like Sweeney Todd and A Little Night Music.

“We’re performing different songs and scenes from Sondheim musicals,” said Cavya Sharma, senior vocal performance major. Sharma, along with the other cast members, enjoys many different aspects of the show, but one particular aspect stands out: the cast.

“It’s a really good group of people,” Sharma said.

The show is also very fast-paced. Instead of having a specific story to tell, the production showcases Sondheim’s works in a musical medley.

“It’s very active,” said cast member Brittany Anderson.

The medley will showcase songs from the popular musicals A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Passion, Company and Into the Woods.

A Little Night of Sondheim premiered yesterday, but there will be another performance at 8 p.m. today in the Music Building Recital Hall. The show is directed by Anthony Perrella, Jr., with Lucia Matos as the music director. Piano accompaniment is played by Mary Hwang. The performance is free and open to the public.
