NIU to observe Military Appreciation Week
October 10, 2012
NIU will observe Military Appreciation Week on Nov. 4 and Nov. 9, said Scott Peska, director of Military Student Services, in an email.
The week will give the community a chance to appreciate student veterans, active duty military members and the ROTC program, according to Military Student Services (MSS). MSS provides resources and contacts for veterans, military students and their families. MSS aims to enhance student life for military students at NIU.
Some of the planned events included free food, beverages and military movies at the MSS lounge. Dodgeball games will be held on Nov. 6 at the Chick Evans Field House. A support group for military faculty and students will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 7 in the Holmes Student Center’s Regency Room. The week will end with a Veterans Day Ceremony at the Veterans Flag Pole.
Peska said the idea behind the week is to highlight and honor student veterans. Peska plans on expanding the events across campus this year. Peska is also is extending the events to small businesses in DeKalb.
