NIU hopes to keep multiple streaks alive against Buffalo

By Matt Hopkinson

As of late, NIU football has strung a number of impressive streaks together.

The Huskies are touting three separate streaks going into their game Saturday, four technically, if you count their streak against its homecoming game opponent.

The Huskies are on a five-game winning streak on the season, a 10-game MAC winning streak and an 18-home winning streak.

NIU will also look to win its eighth straight game against Buffalo since they became MAC foes.

The NIU MAC winning streak is the longest winning streak of any team, in any conference, in the entire country. Their last MAC loss came against Central Michigan last season, which they avenged just two games ago this year.

The home-winning streak and is equally impressive. It ranks third overall in the country, trailing LSU and Wisconsin, with streaks of 21 and 20, respectively.

These streaks are all wonderful footnotes and are interesting factoids, but head coach Dave Doeren knows that they are not a source of motivation.

“Players talk about it and it gets mentioned,” Doeren said in a press conference. “I’m a big believer if we want to keep those kinds of things we have to focus on how to win the game. Every team you play from this point on that’s going to be brought up. I don’t know where it sits in college football as far as other people but that number is impressive and we would like to keep it going. I’m not going to spend a lot of time on it.”

Obviously Doeren is taking the road often traveled by coaches and players and keeping the focus on the next game. While those kinds of phrases and quotes don’t provide water-cooler worthy discussion, the way the team has performed since under his stead has been.

The streaks are all well and good, but what is more important is making it back to the MAC championship and taking home more hardware. My two cents is they have a good chance to both keep the streaks alive and win a championship this year.
