The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra will perform four French Impressionist pieces for their annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the NIU Music Building.

The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra began in 1976 and is a non-profit public orchestra that gives musicians the opportunity to perform in seasonal concerts. The orchestra is made up of student, professional and amateur musicians, including some NIU students. It is directed by Linc Smelser.

Smelser said the orchestra only rehearses six times together before each concert.

“We’ve been rehearsing since Aug. 27, once a week,” Smelser said.

The fall concert, entitled French Impressions Redux, features music from French Impressionist composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

Smelser said the orchestra takes time to interpret the music before they rehearse each piece.

“In Debussy’s La Mer [the sea, in French], we try to incorporate the sound of the sea and waves”, Smelser said.

Tickets go on sale 30 minutes before the concert and can be purchased at the door. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and $5 for chilren under 12. All seats are general admission.
