DeKALB | Antinette “Toni” Keller supporters are currently accepting donations to buy and install a sunflower-shaped bench as a memorial of her to put on the Elks Club property, 209 S. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb.

Keller, a freshman at NIU, was last seen on Oct. 14, 2010, in Prairie Park in DeKalb. Burned remains were found in the park two days later. William Curl, 34, is charged with first-degree murder, criminal sexual assault and arson. His trial is schedule for Dec. 3.

Thelma Holderness, administrator of the Summoning of Yellow Facebook page and janitor at NIU, said it was important for the bench to be shaped like a sunflower.

“She had sunflower tattoos on her chest and yellow was her favorite color,” Holderness said.

Members of the Elk Club suggested having the bench on their property.

“I didn’t have a problem with them putting the bench here,” said James Cochrane, president of the Elk Club Lodge #0765. “We’re honored to have it here. We’re doing whatever we can to help.”

As of now, a white cross with flowers stands behind the Elk Club as a memorial for Keller. Cochrane said the bench will be placed near the cross.

The Elks Club has a collection bucket for Keller set up in their lodge for people to make donations.

“They can contact the Elks Lodge directly, too, if they want to donate,” Cochrane said.

Holderness said the bench costs over $2,900, plus installation. She said the bench should be in place sometime after Curl’s trial.
