After winning its last three games in a row, NIU softball will host DePaul Tuesday.

The Huskies (15-20, 3-4 MAC) have rebounded after dropping 10 of the 11 games prior to the winning streak.

“We have been getting good pitching,” said NIU coach Lindsay Chouinard. “All weekend we got good pitching from Jessica Sturm and Megan Dortch. We had some good timely hitting, the production from the top of our line-up and the middle hitting them in, and playing good defense.”

Offensively, NIU has been getting more hits and runs. In its last three games, it recorded a total of 31 hits while scoring 13 runs.

DePaul (21-12) is currently on a three game win streak of its own, having swept Georgetown over the weekend.

Kirsten Verdun has been the most dangerous bat for the Blue Demons this season, batting .378, with eight home runs, while driving in 33 RBIs.

“DePaul is a great team,” Chouinard said. “They are a great program with a very strong winning tradition and are having a really good season. They do a lot of things well. They pitch well, they hit well, and obviously, defend well, so we are going to have to play to that level. We’re going to have to play that well to compete with them.”

Chouinard has not named a starting pitcher yet, but she will have to be sharp to have success against the DePaul lineup.

“They need to get ahead,” Chouinard said. “They need to keep the ball in the ball park and let people defend. They need to mix speeds and make sure their pitches are in the right location.”

In order for the Huskies to continue having success, they will have to continue playing the way that they have been playing of late.

“We need to do what we did all weekend,” Chouinard said. “We need to pitch well, hit when we need it, take advantage of the opportunities that we are given and defend the ball.”
