After a phenomenal freshman campaign that led to being named MAC Newcomer of the Year, NIU men’s tennis’ Axel Lagerlof continued his dominance.

Playing primarily at third singles this season, Lagerlof has been a monumental piece of the Huskies’ success this season and is the Northern Star’s No. 9 Athlete of the Year.

Lagerlof wrapped up the 2012 regular season with a 21-5 singles record, going 12-2 at third singles and 4-1 in limited time at first singles.

Lagerlof teamed with redshirt freshman Dor Amir to go 19-9 in doubles, with 17 of those victories coming at the one-spot.

In singles, Lagerlof recorded a 10-match winning streak that spanned from March 9 to April 13. In doubles, Lagerlof and Amir won 14 out of 15 matches from mid-February through the end of March. The streak was led by two seven-match winning streaks.

Lagerlof went 4-1 in singles against MAC opponents and was named MAC Player of the Week for the weeks of Feb. 22 and March 21.

“My season was pretty good,” Lagerlof said. “I had some very good wins in a tough conference. I’m pretty happy with my season overall.”
