The cool temperatures didn’t have an affect on the NIU track and field team, as they won the Chicagoland Championships hosted by the University of Chicago Friday.

The Huskies won six event titles and finished with 174 team points. The next closest team was DePaul who finished with 136 team points.

“I was very pleased with our performances, you couldn’t even tell that it was 50 degrees out there,” said NIU coach Connie Teaberry. “The girls really executed. There was no complaining, and they competed really well.”

Chanel Kellyman won the 200 meter race. NIU dominated the race, taking the top-five spots.

Roneisha Frye won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.71, and teammate Megan Gregory finished right behind with a time of 14.06.

Rebecca Cronin won the 800 meter race, which was her first win of the outdoor season.

Freshman Sidra Sherril had a big day in the field events. She recorded her first career event title in the shot put and placed second in discus.

The Huskies also broke facility records at the event. Rasheta Butler won the 100 meter race with a time of 11.92 which broke the Ted Haydon track record. The NIU 4×100 relay team made up of Kellyman, Frye, Butler and Janay Mitchell also broke a facility record by running 45.98.

“Every single performance was big for each athlete,” Teaberry said. “Every single performance was an accomplishment for the team and each individual.”
