NIU baseball gained its composure and swept its three game series with Miami (Ohio) over the weekend, backed by power pitching and hitting.

The Huskies blasted four home runs in three games, hitting more than half the amount they came in with in seven.

“It was a big series for us,” said NIU coach Ed Mathey. “To go on the road in a place like Miami and come away with three is a big boost for our guys. It puts us right back into the pack.”

The Huskies won a nail-biter in the first game, as the score was tied heading into the ninth inning at 7-7. Senior third baseman Troy White would break the tie in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly, which proved to be the game winning run. Latr, senior closer Kyle Glancy notched the save in the bottom half of the frame.

“We know what we’re capable of,” White said. “It was a matter of putting everything together, with our pitching, hitting and defense.”

Due to inclement weather, Saturday’s matchup was postponed, and the two teams would play two Sunday. NIU would prevail once more, despite the game being tied at 5-5 in the fourth inning, following a five run explosion from Miami.

Senior pitcher Jake Hermsen and Glancy would combine to shutdown the RedHawks the rest of the way. Hermsen threw 116 pitches over eight innings, allowing the five runs, only one earned, and Glancy notching his second consecutive save.

“Jake threw a gem of a game,” Mathey said. “He was in command most of the day. If we would have had better defense, we might have given up a few less runs.”

In the final game of the series and the second of the double-header, all bats seemingly sparked to life as the teams would combine for 24 runs on 31 hits. The Huskies outlasted the RedHawks, beating them 13-11, in a paced attack that saw them score in every inning except the seventh.

White knocked in five runs in the game, giving credits to his teammates for putting him in positions to succeed and knock in those runs.
