Softball ready for Missouri Tournament

NIU softball will hit the road again this weekend when it travels to the Missouri Tournament.

The Huskies (5-7) will take on Alcorn State and Boise State Saturday before playing Boise State again and Missouri Sunday.

“We’re working a lot on approaching the plate and defending the ball,” said NIU coach Lindsay Chouinard.

In last weekend’s tournament, NIU split four games in the Coach B Invitational.

In the two victories, Huskies pitcher Megan Dortch allowed one unearned run while striking out 19 and giving up only six hits. She also walked nine batters.

“She needs to be more consistent, and she knows that,” said Chouinard. “We need to limit walks more and she also knows that. That’s stuff that we work on every single day with her, but if she can find a way to control herself and control the things she can control, she’s going to be great.”

The Huskies will take on No. 12 ranked Missouri to finish their road trip Sunday.

The Tigers (10-3) are currently on a five-game winning streak and pose the toughest challenge for NIU over the weekend, but the Huskies are taking each matchup one game at a time.

“What we’re trying to do is prepare for Alcorn State,” Chouinard said. “We’ll prepare for Missouri after we play our other games. When we get to Missouri, obviously, we have an approach and something we want to be able to do, but right now we’re focused on Alcorn State.”
