Bicyclist hit by car near Holmes Student Center

A bicyclist was hit by a car in the bus turnaround at the Holmes Student Center Wednesday.

The collision occurred about 4 p.m. and involved a woman riding a bike rented from Campus Parking Services and a female driver of a black sedan. The bicyclist said at the scene that she was riding her bike in the crosswalk in front of the stop sign at the bus turnaround when she saw a car approaching.

“I saw her…I tried to stop and I swerved but unfortunately I got hit,” the bicyclist said.

The bicyclist received medical treatment from an ambulance at the scene. She said she only sustained scrapes and bruises.

The driver said one campus police officer said she would be given a citation, but another officer said she wouldn’t receive a ticket.

“I obeyed the stop sign,” the driver said. “They can’t give me a ticket for not obeying the stop sign when I did.”

The bicyclist agreed that the driver obeyed the stop sign at the corner.

“I wasn’t hurt,” the bicyclist said. “I used to ride horses, so I know how to fall.”

The driver and bicyclist said they plan to contact each other to take care of damages to the bicycle and would not involve their insurance companies.

NIU Police declined to comment.
