The DeKalb City Council will vote on zoning changes Monday night to allow for a Hampton Inn and Suites to be built in DeKalb, said Mayor Kris Povlsen.

“I think it’s greatly needed,” Povlsen said. “We have a large drawing to the community because of the campus.”

Hampton Inn and Suites would be located north of the Resource Bank, 555 Bethany Road, said Derek Hiland, principal planner of Planning and Development. If the zoning changes pass, developers plan to finish construction on the four-story hotel along with an space for a restaurant by 2012, Hiland said.

Rough estimates show the Hampton Inn and Suites could generate $100,000 to $125,000 in hotel and motel tax revenue, Povlsen said. However, these figures don’t account for other revenues generated from visitors.

When people visit DeKalb, they have to pay for gas, food and other expenses, Povlsen said.

The hotel would also generate revenue via property tax, which would approximately be $10,000 a year, Hiland said. If the hotel builds the restaurant as well, revenues from the restaurant and bar tax could range from $50 to $150,000 per year. The restaurant and bar tax is dependent on if the restaurant becomes a “high-user” or “small-user” establishment, Hiland said. A high-user restaurant can bring in revenues ranging from $100,000 to $150,000, while a small-user restaurant can range from $50 to $100.

Hiland said the hotel would provide students, parents, businesses and other visitors another option when visiting DeKalb.

“I think it would be a wonderful addition to the city,” Hiland said.
