Palmer shines at NIU’s Pro Day

By Jerry Burnes

NIU held it’s Pro Day at Huskie Stadium Friday with draft prospect Chandler Harnish and Scott Wedige working out, among others.

Scouts were on hand from the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

Other Huskies working out were Jordan Delegal, Jasmin Hopkins, Pat Schiller, Trevor Olson, Keith Otis, Willie Clark, Nathan Palmer and DeMarcus Grady. Also working out was North Central tight end Kyle Fiedorowicz and two Western Illinois players.

With a lot of workout numbers not released, it is difficult to measure where they are at. For those with self-reported numbers though, here’s who helped themselves, kept even and hurt themselves Friday.

Up

Nathan Palmer, WR – If anyone “won” Pro Day, it was Nathan Palmer. Known for inconsistent hands but good speed, Palmer had some things to prove. Not a physical receiver, he was only benching two reps at 225 pounds after the GoDaddy.com Bowl and raised that to 13 on Friday. He ran a 40-yard dash in the 4.3s and had an outstanding 37-inch vertical to go along with a 10.5-foot broad jump Maybe the biggest thing for Palmer, he didn’t drop a pass, and saved Chandler Harnish from an incompletion more than once. The only real negative was a few routes he didn’t completely finish, but overall Palmer may have worked himself into the draft if he keeps this effort up.

Scott Wedige, C – Wedige entered as one of the prospects to watch out of NIU. He didn’t disappoint. He led the team with 25 bench reps and did nothing to hurt himself in the other drills. The bench showed more power than was expected. Wedige has been taking snaps under center with Harnish all season, so he had no issues or bobbled snaps.

Pat Schiller, LB – Coming off a great 2011 season and injuries in past seasons, Schiller had a tremendous workout. He ran a 40-yard dash time of 4.68, a pro agility drill of 4.18 and an L-drill time of 6.8. His broad jump was 9’10”. The numbers that really stood out for Schiller were 22 bench reps and a vertical jump of 35.5 inches. Schiller still plans on playing linebacker at the next level, but middle or outside will be decided by the team.

Even

Chandler Harnish, QB – Harnish had a few early struggles with his accuracy but really hit a groove at the end of his throwing session. A few deep passes still hung up but he did nothing to hurt his stock. His good throws were good, his bad were bad and he sprinkled a few that elicited a “wow” from onlookers. Still look for Harnish in the late rounds come April.

Keith Otis, OT – Otis could be a wild card to make an NFL team. He’s not overly powerful which will hurt but he had a good Pro Day. Not sure if he helped himself but he certainly didn’t hurt himself. He recoreded a 5.5 and 5.6 in the 40-yard dash, a 7.83 in the 3-cone, an 8’3” broad jump and a 22-inch vertical.

Down

Trevor Olson, OT – He didn’t allow a sack in 2011 but his workout was not good. A late-round candidate, Olson’s numbers weren’t available. The only workout with a number associated with it was his bench number: 12. That’s not a typo. Olson was out-lifted by wide receivers Palmer and Willie Clark (16). Jasmin Hopkins, all 5-foot, 9-inches and 180 pounds matched Olson’s bench. A knock on Olson was that he lacks power for the NFL level and he did nothing to disprove that.
