City blotter for 3/5/12

Thursday

At 8:52 a.m., a DeKalb police officer on patrol observed a car driving west on Hillcrest and the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The officer initiated a traffic stop in the 900 block of North Annie Glidden Road. The driver, Cesar Mejia, apologized for not wearing his seatbelt and said he just dropped off his girlfriend at class and was in the process of putting it on. The officer found Mejia’s driver’s license was suspended and Mejia was taken into custody. Mejia was taken to the DeKalb Police Department and was later released on bond.

Friday

At 4:12 a.m., DeKalb police received an anonymous complaint reporting that a blue Pontiac was in the drive through at McDonald’s and the passengers were throwing garbage out the windows and the driver was honking the horn. Upon arrival, a DeKalb police officer observed the Pontiac traveling eastbound on the private drive behind the business. The officer caught up with the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, Enrique J. Martinez, 21, of Grayslake, said he was at McDonald’s and he was honking the horn at his friend in front of him. The officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver. Martinez was charged with driving under the influence and having to no insurance. Martinez was arrested, taken to the DeKalb Police Department and was later released on bond.

Saturday

At 2:08 a.m., a DeKalb police officer on patrol observed a 1995 GMC van traveling westbound in the 400 block of West Lincoln Highway in the curb lane and the driver appeared hunched over in his seat, not wearing a seat belt. The officer initiated a traffic stop. The driver, Thomas F. Rhoden, 31, of Richardson, Texas, did not pull over until the 100 block of Normal Road. Rhoden was charged with driving under the influence, not wearing a seat belt and having expired registration.

At 2:43 a.m., a DeKalb police officer on patrol in the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive observed a vehicle traveling westbound and the driver was not wearing a seat belt. The officer watched the driver attempt to put on his seat belt, causing him to swerve and cross the solid yellow lines. The officer initiated a traffic stop. The driver, Ryan M. Levreau, 20, of Mokena, was charged with two counts of driving under the influence, failure to wear a seat belt, no insurance and underage consumption.

SUNDAY

At 1:30 a.m., DeKalb police officer received a report of a fight at Starbusters. When officers arrived on the scene, they observed multiple parties involved with the incident. The officers were able to separate the parties and start an investigation. One suspect, Michelle M. Sotomayor, 19, of Algonquin, was charged with obstructing a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and obstructing identification. Sotomayor was taken into custody. Another suspect, Christopher J. Leifel, 21, of Algonquin, was charged with obstructing a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and possession of cannabis. Leifel was arrested and taken to the DeKalb Police Department.
