City blotter for 2/20/12

The following was taken directly from area police and fire department records, or from DeKalb County court records. Anyone mentioned is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Wednesday
At 11:19 p.m., a DeKalb police officer observed a vehicle traveling westbound in the 1100 block of West Hillcrest Drive with the driver not wearing a seat belt. The officer initiated a traffic stop and smelled a strong odor of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle. The driver, Joshua I. Simmons, 19, of DeKalb, admitted to inhaling cannabis. A search of Simmons led to the discovery of cannabis inside Simmons’ jacket pocket. Simmons was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of cannabis and not wearing a seat belt.
Thursday
At 4:17 p.m., DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office police stopped a vehicle on Annie Glidden Road, north of Fairview Drive, because the registered owner had a suspended driver’s license. The driver, Brian C. Chamberlain, 38, of DeKalb, was arrested for driving while license was suspended. Chamberlain was transported to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office where he was held pending bond.
At 4:44 p.m., DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office police stopped a vehicle on Twombly Road, west of Annie Glidden Road, because the registered owner had a suspended driver’s license. The driver, Tiaira L. Thomas, 21, of DeKalb, was arrested for driving while license was suspended. Thomas was issued an ibond and released.
Friday
At 2:16 a.m., a DeKalb police officer observed a vehicle almost strike another officer while on a non-related call. The officer located the vehicle in the 1200 block of Rushmoore Drive and initiated a traffic stop. The officer smelled a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the driver’s mouth. The driver, Michael P. Murray Jr., 23, of Naperville, failed field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of intoxicating compounds, reckless driving and illegal transportation of alcohol. Murray was arrested and taken to the DeKalb Police Department.
At 1:38 p.m, a DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputy located Jacob Choate, 24, of Hinckley, walking in the 1000 block of Hillcrest Drive. Deputies were aware that Chocate’s license was suspended, and a check of his information revealed a warrant for his arrest. Choate was transported to the DeKalb County Jail pending bond.
At 8:50 p.m., a DeKalb police officer on patrol in the 700 block of North Annie Glidden Road observed a white Mitsubishi traveling southbound did not have a front registration plate. The officer initiated a traffic stop and learned the driver, Tyria L. Davis, 21, of Woodridge, had a suspended driver’s license and no insurance. Davis was transported to the DeKalb Police Department and later released on bond.
At 11:13 p.m., a DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputy observed a vehicle traveling on Lacas Street, south of Taylor Street, without tail lights and initiated a traffic stop. The deputy learned the driver, Edward L. Bell Jr., 55, of DeKalb had a revoked license and no insurance. Bell was arrested and transported to the DeKalb County Jail pending bond.
Saturday
At 12:47 a.m., a DeKalb police officer observed a vehicle driving in an alley behind the businesses in the 200 block of East Lincoln Highway. The driver seemed confused and kept stopping and starting the vehicle, then came to the intersection at Third Street and Lincoln Highway. After the light changed, the driver made a wide right turn. The officer followed the vehicle and observed the vehicle swerve. The officer initiated a traffic stop in the 100 block of Bush Street. The driver, Susan A. Malmborg, 51, of DeKalb, had blood shot and glassy eyes and admitted to the officer she was coming from Tapa La Luna where she had a couple of drinks. Malmborg was charged with two counts of driving under the influence, two counts of improper lane usage and having no insurance.
At 1:56 a.m., DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office police stopped a vehicle on Dresser Road and Annie Glidden Road for speeding. The driver, Nathan Genis, 24, of DeKalb, was arrested for driving under the influence and transported to the DeKalb County Jail pending bond.
At 2:08 a.m., DeKalb police were advised that an unknown male was seen in the 1800 block of North First Street placing a female into a black SUV. Police were advised the SUV was heading southbound on First Street. An officer observed another officer following the vehicle and engage his emergency lights. The vehicle continued westbound on Lincoln Highway and did not stop. Finally, once the driver stopped, the officer noticed a large gash on driver’s forehead and his sweater was covered in blood. The driver, Javier Mondalvo, 39, of DeKalb, said he received the gash because his intoxicated girlfriend fell and while he attempted to catch her, he ended up falling as well. Mondalvo had glassy eyes and his breath smelled of alcoholic beverage. Mondalvo was charged and arrested with driving under the influence and over .08, driving with a suspended license, illegal transportation of alcohol and disobeying a traffic control signal.
At 4:05 a.m., a DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle traveling north on Annie Glidden Road for speeding. The deputy smelled a moderate odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the driver’s mouth and saw the driver’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot. The driver, Elliott M. Tovar, 29, of Kingston, failed field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence and over .08, speeding and failure to notify S.O.S. of address change. Tovar was arrested and transported to the DeKalb County Jail pending bond.
