Track and field set to wrap up indoor regular season
February 15, 2012
NIU track and field’s indoor regular season will come to an end this weekend at the Ball State Quadrangular in Muncie, Ind.
Ball State, Miami (Ohio) and Western Michigan will compete in the meet as well. NIU will look to dethrone Western Michigan, who won the meet the past two years.
NIU coach Connie Teaberry said this gives her squad a chance to see their conference competition before the MAC Championship Feb. 24 and25.
“We’ll get to see what Western Michigan, Miami and Ball State have as far as their athletes,” Teaberry said. “Kind of size them up and get ready for the next week which is the MAC Championship,” Teaberry said.
Teaberry said she’s looking to see her team to put forth an effort similar to its previous meet.
“The most important thing is that the girls stay mentally and physically strong,” Teaberry said. “That they compete just like they did last weekend and compete hard to the very end.”
The Huskies will look to build upon their recent success, which included breaking several schoolrecords as well as many personal bests last weekend at the Iowa State Classic.
The Huskies’ 4 x 400 relay team, made up of Chanel Kellyman, Jenelle McCalla, Julianne and Rebecca Cronin, Cronin, posted 3:47.74, breaking the previous record by about two seconds.
Jenner Sio also broke the record for the triple long jump with 39-01.00.
Teaberry said she expects her team’s success to continue this weekend. .
“I think when you put everything on the line and leave everything on the track great performances happen,” Teaberry said.
